Starbucks unveiled the new cups ahead of Earth Day and as a new report warns plastic production emissions are even greater than those from aviation.
It used to be you had to have money to make money on Wall Street. And few people actually owned stocks. According to the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Financial Characteristics of Consumers , fewer than two families in 10 owned stocks as recently as 1962. However, 60 years later the same survey found as many as 58% of all families owned stocks. There has been a great democratization of investing over those six decades. From the advent of the first discount broker Charles Schwab (NYSE: SCHW ) to deep discount traders like E-Trade and TD Ameritrade, the cost of making an investment has been going down. And Robinhood (NASDAQ: HOOD ) forced the industry to virtually give up transaction fees. Now you can buy and sell stocks at no cost! Essentially all the barriers previously erected to keep investing as the playground of the rich have been torn down. That means you can find stocks to buy with $100 and begin your journey to creating a comfortable retirement today. So if you only have a C-note to your name, and you don’t need that money to pay bills or for an emergency, then the following three stocks should be no-brainer stocks to buy this month.
Starbucks announced it has tweaked its plastic cups. The redesigned ones will be released in some stores in the United States and Canada this year. The company expects to complete the full rollout in select regions by…
View Starbucks has redesigned its single-use cold drink cups to cut down on plastic waste. The chain says its cold drinks are surging in popularity; they now account for some 75% of Starbucks'' drink sales annually. This has caused an associated increase in plastic use, so Starbucks has reworked the design of the cups so that they use as much as 20% less plastic. Now, Starbucks claims, the cups involve less energy and emissions to manufacture, and will help avert more than 13.5 million pounds of plastic waste that would otherwise go to landfills. Updated cups are expected to roll out in its stores by the end of April. SEE MORE: Starbucks adds spicy drinks and cold foam to its menu While the new cups are only meant to be used once before they''re recycled, Starbucks has said it wants to make all of its packaging either reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2030. Starbucks wants to start testing an in-house reusable cup system in some markets, which would let consumers pay a deposit for a cup they could reuse at Starbucks stores and later return when it was worn out.
Booming sales of cold drinks at Starbucks have created a problem: growing amounts of plastic waste from the single-use cups that Frappuccinos, Refreshers, cold brews and other iced drinks are served in.
